A CINNABAR LACQUER AND JADE SCREEN, China, Republic Period (1912-1949)

h. 183 cm x l. 246 cm

Consisting of six panels, each has three black background reserves into which are applied jade figures in the upper ones, animals, trees and rocks in jade and semi-precious stones in the middle ones, and auspicious symbols in jade in the lower ones; all are enclosed between flowers carved in red cinnabar lacquer. On the back of black lacquered wood are beautifully painted storks in landscapes and floral motifs on each panel.
