With deep, rounded sides rising from a gently tapering foot to a flared rim, it is painted on the inside with a central medallion enclosing tendrils wrapped in a flower formed by iron-red stamens enclosed in green clover leaves, the whole surrounded by double-line borders repeated on the rim; the outside is decorated with similar flowers supported by a wavy scroll with leaves above a ruyi band; the rim is bordered by a leaf chevron border In the centre of the base is the six-character mark in underglaze blue the Emperor Wanli within a double circle.

Bowls of this type are particularly rare and are developed from Chenghua (1464-1487) examples, which were particularly appreciated by the Wanli Emperor, so much so that they proliferated during his reign. A closely related example was included in the exhibition Ming and Ch'ing Porcelain from the Collection of the T.Y. Chao Family Foundation, Hong Kong, 1978, cat. no. 40.
