A THANGKA DEPICTING TSONGKHAPA, Tibet - Nepal, 19th century

h. 106.5 cm x l. 68.5 cm

The painting, which retains its red and orange silk damask frame, depicts the lama Tsongkhapa (1357-1419) wearing a pandita hat and the robes of a monk performing dharmachakramudra with both hands. Emerging from the monk's shoulders are two lotus flowers holding a sword and a book, attributes of the bodhisattva of wisdom Mañjuśrī. To the right and left of the lama sit the two disciples Gyaltsap Dharma Rinchen (1364-1432) and Kedrup Geleg Pal Zangpo (1385-1438). Above him sits Shakyamuni Buddha, while all around are scenes from Tsongkhapa's life.
