Beautifully painted on a yellow background, the centre of the shallow dish is decorated with a facetted 'jewel' in pink, red, blue and turquoise that is repeated as pendants hanging from the surrounding lotus scroll, all under a ruyi band and a border decorated with lotus flowers. The back is decorated with flowing lotus scroll and 'jewels'; in the centre of the turquoise base is the six-character iron-red seal mark of the Jiaqing Emperor.
Provenance: from an Italian family.
Catalogue notes:
This pattern was taken from pieces created during the reign of the Qianlong Emperor.
This type of object is quite common on a red or turquoise background and sometimes with a pierced edge, while it is extremely rare to find examples with a yellow background.
See the yellow ground example illustrated in A Survey of Chinese Ceramics, Liu Liang-yu, Taipei, 1991, vol.5, p. 217.
See an extremely similar example with a lime-green ground preserved in the National Palace Museum in Taipei, image number K1B011074N0000000PAE and illustrated in Illustrated Catalogue of Ch'ing Dynasty Porcelain in the National Palace Museum, vol. II, Tokyo, 1981, pl.102.
For a dish with a red ground see the example illustrated in Vom Schatz der Drachen - From the Dragon's Treasure, Gunhild Avitabile, London, 1987, p. 32, no. 21. For one with a turquoise background see the plate from the collection of E.T. Chow sold at Sotheby's, Hong Kong, 30 October 2002, lot 258.
