A RARE GILT CORAL GROUND AND FAMILLE ROSE PORCELAIN BALUSTER-SHAPED VASE, China, Republic Period (1912-1949)

With a short foot and raised rim, the body is magnificently painted with a scene of Liu Hai at the foot of lingzhi, a ruyi scepter, and an attendant holding the three-legged toad; the reserve is enclosed by a coral red background with gold lotus scrolls; the center of the base bears the four-character mark Ju Ren Tang Zhi (居仁堂制).

Provenance: from a private Italian collection.

Catalog Notes:

Ju Ren Tang Zhi translates to “Hall where Benevolence Resides” and was located in Zhongnanhai, the building where Yuan Shikai lived and had his office around 1915.
