A PAIR OF 'MANDARIN' VASES, China, Qianlong period (1735-1796)

Of baluster form with flattened sides, each finely and brightly painted with indented cartouches of identical scenes, on one side with a large oval cartouche depicting the scenes in Mandarin style. Lingzhi mushrooms and gilt boughs moulded in relief and growing from vine which trails over the whole vase, the flowers with layers of petals and the leaves with vein detail, each handle decorated in gilt and iron-red.
